Thousands of claims have been filed with insurers as high winds and torrential rains hit parts of Victoria this week.

Traralgon was badly affected by flooding after the town’s creek overflowed its banks, and Alan Wilson Insurance Brokers was forced to close his office.

Claims manager Vicki Sparkes told insuranceNEWS.com.au she had not seen flooding like this in the city since 1993.

“I got a phone call at 7:30 am yesterday telling me not to go in because the water is halfway up the front door,” she said. “He kept going up until about noon. “

Ms Sparkes says “about half of Traralgon” is flooded.

“The amount of damage done is enormous. There were also trees on cars and buildings.

“I was able to explain to clients that we were part of it too, and the community really came together.

She is concerned that flood coverage “may become a problem” for some clients. “Most of the time the cost is out of proportion to what people can afford,” she said.

Adroit Insurance and Risk chief executive Sharon Cannon told InsuranceNEWS.com.au that her branch in Gippsland, also in Traralgon, was not damaged.

But she says complaints have been received and more are expected, with further difficult weather conditions this evening.

“There is another evacuation order and there will probably be more damage,” she said.

“So far we have had no problem with the lack of flood coverage. Much of this is storm damage. There will also be losses due to the power cuts and many cars have been trapped in the flood waters. “

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) says insurers are closely monitoring the situation in Traralgon and the wider Gippsland region.

“At 10 am this morning, insurers received 3,700 related claims,” a spokeswoman said.

“It is still too early to estimate the damage bill as many communities remain isolated and flood warnings are in place.

“Insurance assessors are ready to move into these communities once the flood waters recede.

“The ICA continues to work with the Victorian government to understand the impacts on the community and ensure that affected residents receive assistance. “
